Professor Mer is based at the Department of Medicine, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa. A specialist physician, pulmonologist and intensivist. Professor Mer is the Clinical Head of the Adult Multidisciplinary Intensive Care Unit at CMJAH and Academic Head of Critical care at the University of the Witwatersrand.He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (London) and a Fellow of the College of Chest Physicians (USA) and is involved in various aspects of clinical research and has participated in more than a 1000 lectures. He is also widely published and a contributor to book chapters, consensus documents, national and international guidelines.He is the author of: “Antifungal Pocket Guide for Systemic Fungal Infections” and editor of the published “Clinical Examination Skills in the Adult Critically Ill Patient”. Professor Mer is a past President of the Critical Care Society of Southern Africa, Portfolio Head of Continuing Medical Education for the South African Thoracic Society, founder member and current Vice-President of the Southern African Society of Thrombosis and Haemostasis (SASTH). He is also the current Chairperson of the Global Intensive Care Group of the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (ESICM).
