Promoting Mobility to Reduce the Impact of Falls

  • Overview of the session: Falls remain one of the most significant risks to older adults, affecting their physical health, psychological wellbeing, and overall quality of life. This presentation explores the broad factors contributing to falls, including mobility limitations, cognitive impairment, and environmental hazards, while highlighting the substantial individual and system‑wide impact of fall‑related injuries. Drawing on evidence‑based frameworks such as multifactorial risk assessments, the Arjo Mobility Gallery™, and principles of supportive design, the session outlines how promoting mobility, creating safe environments and using appropriate equipment can meaningfully reduce fall risk. By understanding the interplay between physical function, emotional state, and care practices, caregivers and clinicians can implement targeted strategies that prevent harm, support independence, and enhance outcomes for both residents and staff.

  • Objectives of the session:

    • Define what constitutes a fall and understand its prevalence and impact in aged care settings.
    • Recognise the physical, psychological, and functional consequences of falls for older adults.
    • Identify key risk factors for falls, including mobility limitations, cognitive impairment, and environmental contributors.
    • Apply evidence‑based assessment frameworks (e.g., multifactorial risk assessment, Mobility Gallery™) to determine an individual’s fall risk.
    • Explain the role of mobility in fall prevention and understand how promoting movement improves outcomes for residents and carers.
    • Outline best‑practice environmental design principles that support safety, independence, and mobility.
    • Implement practical interventions to reduce fall risk, including supportive seating, equipment selection, and safe mobilisation strategies.
    • Describe appropriate post‑fall management actions to ensure safety, assess injuries, and prevent future incidents.
