Driving sustainability in transportation and logistics

Transportation and logistics play a central role in Arjo’s sustainability transformation, reducing emissions from the supply chain. Through strategic initiatives and collaboration, significant steps are made toward more sustainable and cost-efficient logistics.

Optimizing fill-rates and packaging

Maximizing shipment efficiency is one of the most effective ways to reduce transport-related emissions and costs. To achieve this, Arjo is developing improved systems to measure fill rates and identify co-loading opportunities. This work is closely connected to ongoing packaging enhancements that make shipments easier to stack and consolidate. The first improvements are already underway at the production facility in Poznan, with additional sites preparing to follow.

“Better packaging design means products can be stacked more efficiently, reducing the number of shipments required. Fewer shipments translate directly into lower fuel consumption and reduced emissions. This synergy between packaging, stacking, and consolidating shipments is a cornerstone of our approach to more sustainable and cost-efficient logistics,” says Johan Johannesson, Senior Director Global Logistics & Excellence.

Transitioning transport solutions

Another important step toward reducing emissions is partnering with carriers that use biofuels. Achieving this goal requires strong local collaboration and continued dialogue across the organization to ensure commitment to biofuel integration.

At the same time, Arjo is exploring Green Corridors, transport routes designed to minimize environmental impact through low or zero-emission transport methods. Maritime transport currently offers the greatest potential, with vessels powered by alternative fuels such as biofuels, liquid natural gas (LNG), or hydrogen. Further assessments will determine how this approach fits Arjo’s needs, with implementation planned over the coming years.

Implementing sustainability requirements in tenders

Arjo’s global transport function has introduced mandatory sustainability requirements into the transport tender process. These requirements give a clear overview of a carrier’s sustainability ambitions and ensure that new partnerships meet the company’s expectations.

“This approach strengthens our ability to collaborate with carriers who share our commitment to reducing emissions and improving efficiency across the supply chain. By combining smarter packaging, optimized fill rates, biofuel integration, and innovative transport solutions, we are building a logistics network that creates synergies, delivering both reduced environmental impact and greater operational efficiency,” concludes Johan Johannesson.
