Beyond the ICU: Rehabilitation and Recovery After Critical Illness

This webinar is the second part of our two‑part ICU EM webinar series and will explore the challenges faced by patients following critical illness, with a focus on Post-Intensive Care Syndrome (PICS) and its ongoing impact on physical, cognitive, and psychological recovery. The session will introduce strategies to reduce the burden of PICS and highlight the role of rehabilitation following ICU discharge, including assessment, goal setting, and the delivery of patient-centred rehabilitation on the ward. Practical approaches to supporting recovery and improving functional outcomes will be discussed within the context of multidisciplinary care.

By the end of this session participants will be able to:

  • Recognise the physical, cognitive and psychological consequences of critical illness and understand the concept and impact of Post-Intensive Care Syndrome (PICS).
  • Understand approaches to preventing and reducing the impact of PICS, including early identification of risk factors and continuation of rehabilitation throughout the patient journey.
  • Describe key principles of rehabilitation following ICU discharge, including assessment, goal setting and progression of functional recovery on the ward.
  • Apply practical strategies to support patient-centred recovery after ICU, through effective multidisciplinary working, communication and rehabilitation planning.

David McWilliams

Professor of Critical Care and Rehabilitation - University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust

Professor of Critical Care and Rehabilitation, and Clinical Academic Physiotherapist at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust and Coventry University's Centre for Care Excellence. He is the chair of the physiotherapyworking group for the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine, and Chair for the Intensive Care Society National RehabilitationCollaborative. David is the only non-medical clinical coordinator at the National Confidential Enquiry into Patients Outcomes and Death (NCEPOD) and led the recently published national report evaluating rehabilitation and recovery in survivors of critical illness. David isrecognisedas an international expert on critical care physiotherapy and rehabilitation, regularly presenting both nationally andinternationally on the subject.
