Static load and saving time - important factors in hygiene care
Although there is a strong correlation between heavy loads and the process of lifting, literature indicates that static load should not be underestimated. Evidence suggests that exposure to static load can be reduced through a combination of introducing the right equipment and educating staff (Knibbe, 2012). Evaluation of a static load reduction programme showed a reduction of working hours spent in a static overload position from 54% to 25% (Brinkhoff, 2003).
A study comparing Carevo shower trolley with a traditional Hi-Lo shower trolley was carried out. The study showed a 13.4% reduction in static load when using the Carevo compared to traditional shower trolleys (Knibbe, 2012).
A study of postural load and efficiency in bathing and showering residents/patients indicates a 19% increase in time spent in a safe posture when using a shower trolley, compared to washing a resident/patient in a Hi-Lo bed (Knibbe, 1996).
Resident/patient falls in the bathroom Another area of importance in safe resident/patient handling is the reduction of patient falls. In various studies, the bathroom area and a wet floor in the bathroom have shown to be important risk factors with regard to patient falls (Vu 2005; Cameron, 2010). According to the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, approx. 235,000 adults visit emergency rooms every year because of injuries caused in the bathroom. More than 30% of the injuries happen while bathing, showering or getting out of the bath or shower (CDC, 2011).
