About the webinar

“COVID-19: The Tangled Hemostatic Web Revisited”
This webinar will begin with a discussion of the value of individual risk assessment using the Caprini score that represents the most comprehensive risk assessment tool available today.

We know that patients suffering from the COVID-19 virus may be at great risk for morbidity and mortality based on their comorbidities, particularly morbid obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and pulmonary abnormalities. Calculating the degree of risk to determine the intensity of therapy, including thrombosis prophylaxis, is critically important. The specific risks surrounding surgical procedures will be discussed emphasizing the importance of using pneumatic compression prophylaxis during the operative procedure.

The pathophysiology of COVID-19 will be discussed, including the interrelationship between hematologic and immunologic systems that may be referred to as the tangled hemostatic web. Suggested guidelines from the American Venous Forum will be presented, and finally, future considerations for therapy targeted at hematologic and immunologic systems will be presented.

 Learning objectives:
• Understand the value of risk assessment for patients suffering from the coronavirus.

• Learn about the specific risks and the importance of the role of intermittent pneumatic compression in medical, surgical and COVID-19 patients.

• Current update regarding the coronavirus.

• Discussion regarding the tangled hemostatic web.

• Presentation of the current American Venous Forum Guidelines for patients with the coronavirus.

• Description of the future therapeutic options to address hematologic and immunologic changes in patients with coronavirus.
